Loyalty to One’s Country

"My kind of loyalty was loyalty to one’s country, not to its institutions or its officeholders. The country is the real thing, the substantial thing, the eternal thing; it is the thing to watch over, and care for, and be loyal to; institutions are extraneous, they are its mere clothing, and clothing can wear out, become ragged, cease to be comfortable, cease to protect the body from winter, disease, and death."

Mark Twain (1835-1910)

Was Mark Twain Jordanian?

  1. وانا اشهد

  2. Thats it, loyalty has to be to something that is eternal not for something that is ephemeral..
كنت فاعد عالجاعد قامو الجاعد قامو الجاعد من تحتي…..ظليت انا قاعد…
    سليمان عويس

  3. mohanned, i don’t even want to start comparing Mark Twain’s quote to Suleiman Oweis’s! …

by the way, ballah ma enta 7a6 ja3id 3indak bil sayyara?

  4. o baradi kaman

  6. And of course … the most sophisticated accessory in car: the CD!

  7. مارك التواينة

  8. LOL Isam, I just read your comment … hahahahahaha!

    or: مارك التوينات .. LOL!

  9. Mark Twain is not a political scientist. There is no country without its people. Do we believe that a Palestinian in Zion should fight and die to protect Israel just because it occupies a plot of land we call Palestine? a country is a land and its people. not its rulers or offices. jordan is nothing without Jordanians. So for those Jordanians who run around shouting nationalists slogans and supporting dictatorial one man rule in the name of “Jordan” I say shove it where the sun don’t shine. There is no Jordan without Jordanians. And if most Jordanians have a vision that clashes with the parasite class of Jordanians, then it’s those parasites who work contrary to Jordan’s interest, despite their cheap flag waving and slogans.

  10. That was very well said Bader. I totally agree with you and have no comments at all.
However, my interjection lies in the fact that Mark Twain wrote/said that quote more than a 100 years ago but it astonishingly reflects my kind of loyalty.
    Thanks for passing by Bader🙂

  11. Bader,
Can you please define jordan’s interest please? I would like to hear what do you think is our priorities now..Maybe security is not, maybe the “dictatorial” one man rule is what I call a stabilizing factor in a crazy world..
But I do agree with you that jordan us its people..And loyalty should be to the eternal not to the ephemeral..
    God bless jordan…
